Gender Conference hosts the 3rd Global Conference on Gender Studies. The event will engage participants from across the globe in the exploration of multidisciplinary topics such as social construction and role of gender within various societies, the meaning of gender and sex in the past and modern societies, women’s contemporary and historical experiences, and the multiple social identities.

Female Is an Experiential Category

Lecture by Jennifer McWeeny, Professor II at the Centre for Gender Research at the University of Oslo and professor at Emerson College. The question underlying the lecture is that of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir: What is a woman? McWeeny uses Beauvoir’s phenomenological approach to trace the meaning of woman beyond the alternatives of biological determinism and social constructionism. According to this theory, being female is a practical and experiential category, not an empirical one. McWeeny will also show how the phenomenological notion of female opens the door to other phenomenological theories of other sexed locations including male, non-binary, agender, queer, and trans.
