The Council has among other things established the School of Gender Research and provides input regarding Norwegian research policies.
Important tasks for the Council are:
- To suggest which scientific journals should give so called publication points on level 1 or level 2, according to the Norwegian Scientific Index
- Discuss and advice regarding education in the field
- Discuss and advice regarding gender research in Norway
The National Academic Council for Gender Research was established in 2002, and is one of the National Academic Councils in the The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR).
The Council is managed in accordance with regulations based on the standard Academic Council regulations from UHR.
The National Academic Council for Gender Research meets once a year.
The next meeting will be held in September in Trondheim.

Universities and university colleges where gender research is represented are entitled to a seat in the Council. As of today the following institutions are members:
- University of Agder
- University of Bergen
- University of Nordland
- University of Oslo
- University of Tromsø
- Norwegian student organization
